Clothes have never been just clothes: How fashion became a silent way of telling who we are

There's something important about clothing, and that's the flexibility we have when choosing what to wear. You don't have to be a fashion expert to combine colors, textures, and styles that make you feel confident. Just pay a little attention to the details and shapes of each piece so you can confidently communicate who you are to others.
A dress can remind us of a stage in our lives. A blazer can make us feel more confident before an important meeting. A pair of sneakers can symbolize a new version of ourselves.
Although we often associate fashion with trends, colors, or styles, the reality is that the relationship between clothing and identity is much deeper. Clothing has never been just clothing; it's also a form of expression.
Fashion as a tool for personal expression
Several studies suggest that fashion functions as an extension of self-concept.
A recent study published in the Journal of Creative Communications examined how people use fashion as a vehicle for self-expression and found a significant relationship between self-concept and the way individuals use clothing to communicate who they are.
The conclusion is simple: we often don't choose clothes solely for aesthetic reasons. We also choose them because they represent something about us.
The phenomenon of “enclothed cognition”
There is a fascinating concept within psychology known as " enclothed cognition." The term was introduced by psychologists Hajo Adam and Adam D. Galinsky in a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology in 2012. The researchers defined the concept as:
“The systematic influence that clothing has on the psychological processes of the wearer.”
Her research found that clothing can influence attention, behavior, and how people perceive themselves.

What we wear communicates before we speak.
Clothing also influences how other people perceive us.
A 2023 analysis published in Personality and Social Psychology Review argues that clothing is a fundamental component of social perception. The researchers identified that people use clothing to infer social categories, status, cognitive states, and aesthetic preferences.
In other words, our appearance is already communicating information before we utter a single word.
The search for authenticity
The connection between fashion and identity is also influencing the industry. According to research cited by Vogue Business and conducted by Bain & Company , 82% of consumers seek brands and products that help them express who they truly are.
This change helps explain the rise of trends such as:
personal style over rigid trends;
“quiet luxury”;
more conscious consumption;
the search for authenticity.

Perhaps that's why we often remember stages of our lives through what we wore. Not because clothes are the most important thing, but because they were present during moments that transformed us: new beginnings, farewells, celebrations, changes, and personal discoveries.
Over time, our style evolves because we evolve too. From the woman we were when we had a dream. From the woman we had to be to get through a difficult time. From the woman we are still becoming.
Because what we truly preserved was never the clothes themselves. It was the story we lived while wearing them, and that will never cease to be authentic.
